The Effects of Foam on Non-Contacting Radarbased Level Measurement

This paper studies the effects of foam on the transmission and reflection of microwave signals for radar instruments used in level measurement. A test scenario consisting of a periodic two-dimensional wet monodispersed foam layer at the separation boundary between two media was modeled. The bubble size, number of layers and material properties were parametrically controlled to cover a wide range of values. Scattering parameter values were extracted for low (6GHz) and high (26GHz) process radar frequencies and analyzed to illustrate the effects a foam layer has on microwave propagation.
