Numerical Modeling of a Microstrip Patch Antenna for Wireless Applications

In the present paper, it was completed the design and numerical simulation of a rectangular patch antenna with an inset microstrip feeding line using the Finite Element Method (FEM) based Comsol Multiphysics software. The selected operating frequency of 1.64 GHz for this antenna represents the lower limit in the working frequency band of various modern wireless systems. Reflection coefficient S11 and the maximum gain at a far field radiation in E-plane were computed here, and qualitative parameters of the antenna, like Front to Back (F/B) ratio and -3dB Band Width (BW) were also determined. The optimal model of the antenna having the microstrip feed line at y = 16 mm presented an F/B ratio of 29.7 dB and a value of 520 for the parameter -3dB BW.
