Comparative Analysis of Two D.C. Magnetic Properties Measurement Procedures

Recently, great effort has been put into optimizing the operation of particle accelerator magnets. The core of a particle accelerator magnet has the purpose to amplify and guide the magnetic flux. Therefore, accurate information on the material in the core is required in order to predict its magnetic behaviour. Due to the fact that the ramping rate of these devices is in the order of 10 T/s relevant magnetic information is obtained under quasi-static magnetic measurements. In this paper d.c. magnetic measurements obtained with two methods are presented and analysed. The difference in the results obtained using the open-loop control method presented by IEC international standard and a flux waveform control are discussed.
